Founder and Reading Specialist

BS, MBA, Certified Orton-Gillingham Educator

I entered the wonderful world of OG by accident. I was a stay at home mom with a strong background in corporate finance and degrees from both Bentley and Babson Colleges. My husband and I lived an existence of parental bliss watching our two beautiful sons explore the

world around them. This paradise came to a screeching halt the day my older son, Matthew, came home from his first day in first grade. He was an easy-going child, and yet, when we walked in the door from the bus stop, he collapsed in my arms and sobbed for 45 minutes. When questioned, he was unable to articulate his frustrations. Before long, I was on the phone with the school trying to unravel the mystery.

This routine continued throughout the school year. After many failed attempts to get the proper assistance, my confidence in the school was shot. My husband and I moved Matthew to a private Montessori environment. His self-esteem soared, and he thrived in the noncompetitive, kinesthetic world. His math skills climbed, and yet he still remained at a stand still with reading and writing.

At the end of second grade, we scheduled him for a neurophsychological evaluation. Matthew was diagnosed with dyslexia and many secondary learning deficits. We immediately pursued doctors’ advise and enrolled him in a multi-sensory reading program. For the first time, he was starting to connect the dots and actually see words!

Eventually, we moved Matthew back to the public schools, and I have worked closely with them, in a positive fashion, formulating strong IEPs and changing supports as necessary. In addition, I have immersed myself in the fascinating world of "invisible disabilities". I have been educating myself at every opportunity. I am currently a Certified Member of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Educators and Practitioners, and work out of my home. My success with students of all ages has led to a fulfilling career.  My success is recognized outwardly as well. Five public school systems currently employ me, as needed, for services of challenged students.

Below is my background and training in this dynamic field:

Trained in Orton-Gillingham at the Carroll School: Completed both the nine month full-time training course at The Carroll School, including 225 hours of supervised practicum (2.25x the requirement) and 90 hours of coursework (1.5x requirement) , as well as the two year night course for Advanced level of Certification.
